Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has launched a pilot project to undergrade overhead electrical wires in its Shalimar Bagh constituency.
New Delhi: Underground cables will be laid in Janakpuri, Malviya Nagar and Safdarjung. Earlier this month, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has launched a pilot project to undergrade overhead electrical wires in BH block of its Shalimar Bagh constituency. This project will be completed in three months at a cost of Rs 8 crore. He said that his government has planned to expand the project in other parts of the national capital as well. Officials said that after Shalimar Bagh, the project is now being expanded in the C4E block area of Janakpuri.
Cables will be laid in Malviya Nagar, Shahdara and Safdarjung
Delhi Energy Minister Ashish Sood is an MLA from Janakpuri constituency of West Delhi. According to officials, the projects for further expansion of projects in areas like Malviya Nagar, Safdarjung Development Area (SDA) and Shahdara are in the pipeline. Work will start after getting administrative approval. A DISCcom source said that the Janakpuri project being implemented by Discom BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) included about two kilometers overhead low tension (LT) electrical wires with about 2.5 kilometers of underground LT feeder cable and 2,400 meter service cable. The new underground network contains 15 strategically installed 15 feeder pillars. This Major will cover 13 major streets of the area including P. Srikumar Marg, Shani Bazar Road, Ram Mandir Marg. The work of installation of feeder pillars is still going on and the work of laying cable has also started.
Expected to be completed by the end of August
He informed that this work is expected to be completed by the end of August. He said that timely completion of the project depends on the permission from the municipal bodies to cut the road on time. Officials said that the C4E block in Janakpuri was strategically selected on the basis of practical ideas such as availability of space for new infrastructure and density of the existing overhead network. Discom sources said that pilot projects include advanced technical solutions such as a fully automated Fault Restoration Terminal Unit (FRTU) to detect any defect within 15 minutes. Also, IOT (Internet of Things) based sensors will provide real -time monitoring for maintenance and load management.
100 crore rupees allocated for project
A discom official stated that undergrounding electrical wires means that residents of an area face minimal disruption in supply due to accidental breakdown of wires and uprooting pillars, which often occurs during storms and rains. He said that the Janakpuri pilot being implemented by BSES will pave the way for extensive change in underhead power network from overhead in many parts of Delhi, which will greatly boost the urban infrastructure. He said that apart from this, some areas are very narrow and rocky, where digging is difficult due to the movement of public and traffic. He said that another challenge is to get permission to cut the road on time. The Delhi government has allocated Rs 100 crore in budget 2025-26 for underground cable.
