Will ICT-BD give verdict against Sheikh Hasina?

Sheikh Hasina News: Preparations have started to hang Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. The International Criminal Tribunal has asked to give its verdict on November 17 in the case of suppressing the July rebellion.

Sheikh Hasina News : The interim government is continuously tightening its grip on former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Meanwhile, the country’s International Criminal Tribunal (ICT-BD) announced on Thursday that it will pronounce its verdict against Sheikh Hasina in the crimes against humanity case. Sheikh Hasina, 78, is facing several cases after a major student-led agitation in August last year. According to a report by the UN Human Rights Office, 1,400 people were killed between July 15 and August 15 last year (known as the July Uprising) as Hasina’s government ordered a crackdown on protesters.

Tribunal declared him a fugitive

At the same time, a lawyer present in the special court told news agency PTI that the three-member panel chairman of the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT-BD) Justice Ghulam Murtuza Mozumdar has fixed November 17 to pronounce the verdict. Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, the Home Minister in the Hasina government, and Chaudhry Abdullah Al-Mamun, the then Inspector General of Police (IGP), were tried in the tribunal. Apart from this, the former Prime Minister and Kamal were tried in their absence and the court declared them fugitives. Chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam has sought the death penalty for Hasina, accusing her of being the mastermind behind crimes against humanity during last year’s mass protests.

54 witnesses appeared before the court

On the other hand, Hasina’s supporters say that the allegations against her are politically motivated. Mamun faced trial in person, but appeared as a government witness. The former police chief appeared in the dock after ICT-BD Chairman Justice Majumdar announced the date of verdict. The Bangladesh court concluded hearing in the case on October 23 after 28 days of hearing, when 54 witnesses testified before the court and explained how efforts were made to control the July uprising last year, which toppled the Hasina government on August 5, 2024. Let us tell you that she had fled from Bangladesh on August 5 last year amid increasing unrest and is currently living in India. It is being told that Kamal has also taken refuge in the neighboring country. Also, the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has demanded the extradition of Hasina, at present there is no official response from India on this.
