Shashi Tharoor: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed his displeasure over the nomination of Veer Savarkar Award. Shashi Tharoor clearly said on Wednesday that he will not take any award in the name of VD Savarkar nor will he attend any function related to him. Whereas a senior party colleague wanted the Congress MP not to take any honor in the name of the thinker who had “bowed his head before the British.”

Tharoor got angry on not getting information

Thiruvananthapuram MP Tharoor said that he will not accept the “Veer Savarkar Award” and will not even attend the event where it will be given unless clear information is given about its nature or the organization giving it. Regarding his attendance at the awards ceremony, Tharoor said, “I heard about it only yesterday. I am not going. I am not here.” Subsequently, in a post on social media platform ‘X’, the Congress MP said, “In the absence of clarification regarding the nature of the award, the organization giving it or any other contextual details, the question of my attending the event today or receiving the award does not arise.”

‘Accepting the award would be an insult to the party’

Earlier in the day, Congress leader K Muraleedharan told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram that no party member, including Tharoor, should receive any award in the name of Veer Savarkar “because he bowed before the British.” Muraleedharan said that he does not think that Tharoor will accept the award because doing so would dishonor the Congress party and embarrass him. Tharoor later said that he heard about the award on Tuesday and he was not going to the ceremony.

What did the organizer say?

After Tharoor’s statement, Aji Krishnan, secretary of High Range Rural Development Society (HRDS) India, which gave the award, told a TV channel that the Congress MP was informed about the matter long ago. He said that the representative of HRDS India and the chairman of the award jury had met Tharoor at his home and the MP had asked for the list of other award recipients. Krishnan claimed, “We have given him the list. He has not yet told us that he will not come to the event. Maybe he is scared because Congress has made it an issue.”
