Bengaluru News: Dalit youth died in police custody in Bengaluru. There was a stir in the police administration after the death. The administration adopted a strict stance and suspended four policemen. Four policemen have been suspended in connection with the death of a 22-year-old Dalit youth at a rehabilitation center near the city, days after he was tortured in custody, a police officer said on Wednesday. Here Darshan PG, resident of Viveknagar, died on 26 November. He said that an inspector, a constable and two other policemen attached to Viveknagar police station were suspended on Tuesday. The senior police officer said that the case is now being investigated by CID. The mother of the deceased youth has alleged in her complaint that her son Darshan was arrested by the police on November 12 under the influence of alcohol.
There were injury marks on son’s body: Mother
The youth was accused of fighting with neighbors while drunk. He was also creating nuisance. Later, on November 16, on his mother’s request, he was sent to a rehabilitation center on the outskirts of Bengaluru instead of jail because he was an alcohol addict, another senior police officer said. He alleged that the police took Rs 7,500 for admission and sent Darshan straight to a rehabilitation centre. However, his mother was not allowed to talk or meet her son there and when she inquired, the concerned authorities assured her that he was fine. The complainant alleged that on November 26, she was told that her son had died after suffering from breathing problems. When the mother reached the rehabilitation center, she saw that injury marks were visible on her son’s body. The mother suspected that he was tortured by the police while in custody, due to which he later died in a rehabilitation centre.
Murder case registered against policemen
The officer said that based on the allegations made by the mother in her complaint, we have registered a case at Madanayakanahalli police station under sections 103 (1) (murder) and 127 (3) (wrongful confinement) and 3 (5) (common intention) of the Indian Judicial Code. Apart from this, relevant sections of SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have also been imposed against four police officers and the owner of the private rehabilitation centre. The police officer said that the case has been transferred to CID. CID will investigate the allegations and the entire sequence of events from that time. When the youth was detained and died in the rehabilitation center, this case will also be investigated by CID.
