Earthquake in Japan: A powerful earthquake caused massive devastation in Japan on Monday night. People came out of their homes in panic. Roads were damaged, due to which parked vehicles got stuck in the roads. Hundreds of electric poles were broken, causing darkness in the area. A powerful earthquake of 7.5 magnitude occurred in northern Japan late Monday night, due to which 23 people were injured. The earthquake caused a tsunami in the Pacific coastal areas. Officials have warned of an increased risk of aftershocks and extremely powerful earthquakes. The Japanese government is still assessing the damage caused by the late night earthquake and tsunami. The earthquake occurred at around 11:15 pm in the Pacific Ocean, about 80 kilometers off the coast of Aomori, the northernmost province of Japan’s main Honshu island. Nobuo Yamada, a shop owner in Hachinohe city of Aomori prefecture, told public broadcaster NHK that he had never seen such a severe earthquake.

Warning of tsunami waves up to 10 feet
The Japan Meteorological Agency said a tsunami of up to 70 centimeters (2 feet 4 inches) was measured in Kuji port in Iwate Prefecture, south of Aomori, and that tsunamis of up to 50 centimeters were recorded in other coastal areas in the region. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said 23 people were injured, including one seriously. According to NHK report, most of the injuries were caused by falling objects. Apart from this, several people were injured in a hotel in Hachinohe and a person in Tohoku was injured when his car fell into a pit. The meteorological agency reported the earthquake’s intensity as 7.5. The Meteorological Department had issued a warning of tsunami waves up to three meters (10 feet) in some areas. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara urged residents to move to higher ground or seek shelter. He told that there has been power failure in about 800 houses. There is darkness in the area. Shinkansen bullet trains and some local lines have been suspended in some parts of the region.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara said that safety checks are being conducted in the nuclear power plants of the region but nothing of concern has come to light. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the government has formed an emergency task force to immediately assess the extent of the damage. He said that it is most important for us to save people’s lives and we are making every possible effort. The meteorological agency said the earthquake occurred about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Hachinohe and about 50 kilometers (30 miles) below sea level. NHK said authorities lifted all tsunami advisories for the Pacific coastline in northern Japan at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday. The U.S. Geological Survey reported another magnitude 5.1 earthquake early Tuesday, about 122 kilometers (76 miles) south of Honcho at a depth of 35 kilometers.
