Utpana Ekadashi is falling on the 15th of this month. You must have heard the elders in your house saying that we should not eat rice on the day of Ekadashi. It is believed that eating rice on Ekadashi is as sinful as eating meat. Today we will tell you about the mythology and science behind it.
mythological reasons
According to the legend, in ancient times Maharishi Medha performed the Yagya. A beggar also came to that yagya. Maharishi insulted that monk. Due to this, Mother Durga became angry with Maharishi Medha. To appease the mother and to escape her anger, he gave up his body. After leaving his body, his body parts got absorbed into the earth. Pleased with the atonement of Maharishi Medha, Mother blessed that his parts would grow from the earth in the form of food. After this, rice and barley grew on the earth from his particles. For this reason rice and barley are considered living beings. It is believed that the date of that day was also Ekadashi. Therefore, eating rice and barley is prohibited on the day of Ekadashi. One who eats rice on Ekadashi faces as much sin as eating meat, because it originated from the body of Maharishi Medha.
scientific reasons
According to scientific evidence, rice has high water content. Moon also has great influence on water. Eating rice increases the amount of water in the body, due to which the mind can become disturbed and restless. When the mind is disturbed, the rules of fasting cannot be followed, hence eating rice on the day of Ekadashi is prohibited.
