Vanniyar Reservation: The demand for reservation for Vanniyars has intensified in Tamil Nadu. PMK leader has announced agitation in the entire state regarding reservation. Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss on Sunday announced a statewide jail bharo agitation on December 17. In which 15 percent reservation has been demanded for Vanniyars under backward class quota in Tamil Nadu. He called upon his party workers and Vanniyars to gherao government offices across Tamil Nadu on 17 December. Emphasize the demand for internal reservation for Vanniyars in education and government jobs. Anbumani said that the purpose of this movement is to bring the demands of the community before the government. Recalling the Supreme Court’s order of March 31, 2022, it said that if sufficient data is collected then there is no legal bar on giving internal reservation to Vanniyars.

Got only assurance from government: PMK

The top PMK leader said that the DMK government could have enacted the Vanniyar reservation law within 27 days of the verdict, but it was not done even after more than 1,300 days. He said the party initially chose the path of talks, believing that Chief Minister MK Stalin would move quickly to implement the quota. According to him, the PMK delegation met Stalin at the Secretariat on May 8, 2022, where the Chief Minister assured him that a special session of the Assembly would be called and the Vanniyar Reservation Act would be passed before the commencement of admissions for the 2022 academic year. Dr. Anbumani also said that PMK founder Dr. S. Ramadoss had also written 10 letters on this issue. Had also spoken on telephone and once met the Chief Minister in person, while he himself had three personal meetings.

Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Commission also targeted

He said that every time we were assured that reservation would definitely be given. He further said that the party came to know the real face of the government when it said before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections that Vanniyar reservation could not be implemented, citing the absence of a caste-based census. He described this as a new betrayal due to which there is continuous anger among the party workers and the community. He also targeted the Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Commission and described it as anti-social justice. Told that although the government had asked it to submit its recommendation on reservation for Vanniyars within three months, no report was given even after almost 1,040 days.
