Jammu & Kashmir News: Controversy arose in Jammu and Kashmir regarding taking more admissions of Muslim students in SMVDIME. Hindu organizations protested against this and demanded cancellation of the admission list.

Jammu & Kashmir News : Controversy arose over the admission of Muslims in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) located in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. This controversy gained momentum when in the first list released in the session of 2025-26 MBBS seat allotment list, out of 50 seats, 42 Muslim students were admitted and 8 Hindu students. After this Hindu organizations started opposing it. Meanwhile, ruling National Conference (NC) leader Tanveer Sadiq on Sunday strongly criticized BJP’s demand to cancel the admission list in SMVDIME. He said that the demand to reserve seats for students who have faith in the Goddess is misleading and dangerous.

Hindu organizations protested heavily

At the same time, BJP leader Jahanzaib Sirwal also criticized the demand for cancellation of seats given to Muslim students. He called this irresponsible and unconstitutional. He said that this institute is a public university formed under a law of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. SMVDIME has approved 50 MBBS seats this year and the admission of 42 students from a particular community in the first batch for the 2025-26 academic year has created a controversy. Right-wing Hindu groups are raising questions on this process and are demanding that the newly created institute be given the status of ‘Minority Institution’. However, the administrative officials of the institute say that admission is given on the basis of merit.

BJP leader met LG

A delegation of BJP MLAs under the leadership of Leader of Opposition in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Sunil Sharma met Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha here late Saturday night. During this, he demanded that the admission list should be canceled and those seats in the institute should be reserved only for those students whose faith is in Mata Vaishno Devi. Sadiq said in a post on What kind of country will you create if schools, colleges and institutions start doing admissions on the basis of religion? Tomorrow will any patient be treated according to his religion? Will merit be sidelined to meet the demands of the majority? This is just a recipe for disaster and nothing more. Let us tell you that Sirwal said in one of his statements that this is not a private temple trust or religious institution. No organization receiving government money can discriminate on the basis of religion. He mentioned Articles 14, 15 and 29(2) of the Constitution.
