Ajay Devgn: Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgan has got big security from Delhi High Court. Recently, while protecting his personality rights, the court has ordered many websites and online platforms not to take commercial advantage by using the actor’s name or photo without permission. In particular, instructions have been given to immediately remove objectionable content being spread through AI and deepfakes.

Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora clearly said during the hearing that unauthorized use of Ajay Devgan’s name, image and personality is completely wrong. The court is going to stop those websites which were earning money by selling fake pictures, deepfake videos of Ajay Devgan or similar products. Ajay’s lawyer, Praveen Anand said that caps, stickers and posters were being sold on some platforms, on which fake pictures of Ajay were printed. Apart from this, in some videos he was shown wrongly along with other celebrities.

Misuse of AI and deepfakes is increasing rapidly in the digital age. The court also banned this and ordered to remove those content which were damaging the image of Ajay Devgan, especially the objectionable or obscene content. However, those pictures which are mere ‘reproductions’ but not obscene were not ordered to be removed immediately. But the court has indicated for further hearing on this.

During the hearing, the court asked whether Ajay Devgan’s team had earlier complained on platforms like YouTube and Google. Then the reply was received that this was not done, then the court made it clear that in future any celebrity will have to file a formal complaint on social media intermediaries before coming to the court.

Interestingly, in the last few months, many big stars like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Karan Johar, Kumar Sanu, Nagarjuna and journalist Sudhir Chaudhary have also approached the High Court in similar cases. Everyone has got interim relief for the protection of publicity rights.
Why was the petition necessary?
This case was related to misuse of Ajay Devgan’s identity, name, image and voice. In the digital world, these rights are called ‘Publicity Rights’. These rights mean that a person should have control over the use and profit made from his image or name. At the same time, this decision of Delhi High Court is a strong message not only for a big star like Ajay Devgan but for the entire entertainment industry that playing with anyone’s identity will not be tolerated even in the internet world.
