CNG crisis in Mumbai: People’s problems increased due to damage to the gas pipeline in Mumbai. Thousands of vehicles were parked everywhere. People had to face a lot of problems to go to offices and other places. A huge crowd was seen at CNG pumps for gas. Long queues were seen to fill fuel at CNG pumps in Mumbai on Monday. This situation arose due to the damage to a major gas pipeline. Gas supply was disrupted due to damage to the pipeline. Thousands of autorickshaws, taxis and other CNG-powered vehicles were parked everywhere. A representative of an organization of local petrol dealers said that many CNG pumps in the city have been closed since morning due to low gas pressure. A large number of auto rickshaws, taxis and buses have stopped. Dependent on compressed natural gas (CNG) supplied by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL).

Many pumps closed in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai

In a statement issued on Sunday night, MGL said someone damaged GAIL’s main gas supply pipeline inside the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) complex, causing the disruption, affecting supply at the City Gate Station (CGS) in Wadala. City Gate station is a major hub for gas supply in Mumbai. Due to the affected supply the pressure in the entire network reduced. Many CNG stations in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai are running at limited capacity or are temporarily closed. Petrol Dealers Association (Mumbai) President Chetan Modi told PTI that due to low gas supply pressure, many CNG pumps in the city have been closed since morning. He said that when he had spoken to MGL officials some time ago, he was told that the work to restore normal CNG supply was going on a war footing and it could take a whole day to completely restore the damaged pipeline in RCF.

Advice on using alternative fuels

Modi said that I have kept my pump switched off since morning because there is no gas pressure. Anil Garg, leader of an organization of school bus operators, also said that their operations have been affected due to the shortage of CNG. Garg said that many school buses in the Mumbai metropolitan area are facing difficulty in getting CNG. He said that they had to mix routes of school buses. MGL said it has given priority to residential consumers to ensure uninterrupted availability of piped natural gas (PNG) to homes. It has advised industrial and commercial consumers in the affected areas to use alternative fuels until supplies are restored. MGL regretted the inconvenience and said that after the damage is repaired and supply is restored at CGS Wadala, gas supply in MGL’s network will become normal. The company has not given any time limit for restoration of complete supply.
