Delhi Government: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inspected the ghats of Yamuna river on Saturday to take stock of the preparations for the upcoming Chhath Puja. He said that his Sanatani government is preparing for a grand event of the festival on the banks of the river. The Chief Minister along with Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Kapil Mishra directed the officials to ensure proper preparations for the four-day festival to be celebrated from October 25-28.

Temporary ghats will be built along the river

In a video message, the Chief Minister said that for years, due to the negligence of the previous government, Chhath celebrations were not being held on the banks of Yamuna and Purvanchali people lived away from the river. Gupta said that now there is a ‘Sanatani’ government and it is our duty to ensure that the Chhath festival in Delhi is grand. Therefore, we have decided that the Chhath festival will be celebrated on the banks of Yamuna. He said that the ceremony will be sacred and the Delhi government will make timely arrangements for cleanliness and security at the ghats. Gupta had earlier announced that his government would build temporary ghats on both sides of the river. However, he also clarified that the courts do not allow immersion in the water of Yamuna.

Identification of 100 places for worship

Culture Minister Mishra said that BJP’s victory in the Delhi assembly elections earlier this year was the blessings of Yamuna Maiya. He said that the decision to celebrate Chhath on the banks of the river is historical. Mishra said that the devotees of Delhi were waiting for this opportunity. This is the first Chhath after the election to be celebrated on the banks of the Yamuna. This has been possible due to the Chief Minister’s resolve, although it seemed difficult at first. Officials said that the Irrigation and Flood Control Department of Delhi Government has identified at least 100 places in Yamuna and other areas, where temporary arrangements are being made. He informed that the department will handle the preparation of the ghats, while the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has been tasked to control the white foam in Kalindi Kunj.
