Shivraj Patil Passed Away: Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil died on Friday in his home town Latur in Maharashtra. Patil breathed his last at the age of 90. His family told that he was ill for several days. He was a former speaker of the Lok Sabha and had held an important position in the Union Cabinet. Patil had won from Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times.
Patil was the Home Minister at the time of Mumbai attacks
Shivraj Patil was one of the veteran leaders of Congress. He won from Latur Lok Sabha constituency seven times. Even after losing in 2004, he remained the Home Minister from Rajya Sabha. He held central responsibilities during the UPA tenure. Big leaders and workers of Congress have expressed grief over his demise and expressed condolences to his family. Shivraj Patil handled many responsibilities in the UPA government. Even after losing the elections, UPA had given him the post of Home Minister. When the Mumbai attacks took place in 2008, he was also the Home Minister. Taking responsibility for the security lapse, he resigned from his post.

Minister in Indira and Rajiv governments
Shivraj Patil was born on October 12, 1935 in Latur, Maharashtra. He was an MLA in the Maharashtra Assembly from 1973 to 1980. From 1980 to 1999, he was MP from Latur Lok Sabha constituency seven times. Shivraj Patil was the Defense Minister in the government of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. After this he also handled the Civil Aviation Ministry in the Rajiv Gandhi government. After becoming the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, he started using modern technology in the Parliament. After the Mumbai attacks in 2008, he resigned from the post of Home Minister. After this, he remained the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.
