G-20 Summit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Johannesburg on Saturday. Modi met Starmer and Guterres on the sidelines of the G-20 leaders’ summit hosted by South Africa. Modi said that meeting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Johannesburg was wonderful. This year there has been new energy in the India-UK partnership and we will continue to take it forward in many areas. The Prime Minister said that he had a very useful conversation with UN Chief Guterres. Addressing the inaugural session of the G-20 leaders’ meeting, Modi called for a deep rethinking of global development norms. He proposed the establishment of a G-20 initiative and a global healthcare response team to counter the drug-terrorism nexus. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni during the ongoing G-20 summit in Johannesburg.

India-Italy’s emphasis on defence, security
Both the leaders participated in multilateral discussions and discussed various issues. Also expressed satisfaction over the deepening of strong relations between India and Italy. In the meeting, both emphasized on increasing cooperation in areas like defence, security, trade, technology and clean energy. In the G-20 summit held on African soil, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the need to rethink the parameters of global development. Speaking on the topic ‘Inclusive and sustainable economic growth by taking everyone along’, he said that the G-20 may have given direction to the world’s economies, but the current development model has kept large populations away from resources and promoted over-exploitation of nature, the impact of which is felt most in African countries.
Discussion on relations with Australian PM also
Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was given a grand welcome on his arrival in South Africa on Friday. The Indian community gathered in the hotel in Johannesburg presented many cultural programs. Children recited Ganesh prayer and peace mantra. At the same time, a female artist sang a hymn praising the glory of Ganga in a distant continent. The Prime Minister appeared overwhelmed after watching the presentations of Indian artists. PM Modi had a bilateral meeting with Australian PM Anthony Albanese in Johannesburg. During this, both the leaders discussed increasing cooperation in the direction of defense and security, essential minerals and trade and investment. Progress in people-to-people relations was also reviewed. During this meeting, which took place a few hours after the Prime Minister reached South Africa, both the leaders expressed their commitment to fight together against terrorism which has become a challenge across the world.
