Drone Attack: A horrific drone attack took place on the city of Kalogi in Sudan’s South Kordofan state, in which a kindergarten was targeted, killing at least 50 people, including 33 children. Sudan Doctors Network said that after receiving the information, paramedics who were engaged in relief work after reaching the spot, were also attacked by a second drone, due to which the situation became more serious. Emergency Lawyers, a rights group that monitors violence against civilians, also confirmed that there was a second attack on medical workers treating the injured. Apart from this, a third nearby civilian area was also targeted. Both groups strongly condemned the attacks and blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for it. The number of deaths is expected to be higher. The exact number of casualties has not been known due to communication breakdown in the area.
Children should not be targeted: UNICEF
Thursday’s attack was the latest example of fighting between the RSF and the Sudanese army, which have been at war for two years. Now it is concentrated in the oil-rich Kordofan states. Beating children at school is a terrible violation of children’s rights. Sheldon Yate, UNICEF representative for Sudan, said in a statement on Friday that children should never pay the price of conflict. He said that UNICEF has called on all parties to immediately stop these attacks and ensure safe and uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need. Hundreds of civilians were killed in Kordofan states over the past few weeks as intense fighting shifted from Darfur after the RSF captured the besieged town of al-Fasher.
Condemnation of drone attack
Sudanese military air strikes on Saturday killed at least 48 people, mostly civilians, in Kouda, South Kordofan. UN human rights chief Volker Turk has warned that Kordofan could face new atrocities like Al-Fashar. Apart from this, RSF in a statement on Friday condemned the drone attack on the Chad-Sudan border. Accused the Sudanese army of being behind it and posted a video showing a plume of black smoke. Civilians were killed during the violent occupation of al-Fashar by the RSF. Thousands of people fled and thousands more are feared dead or trapped in the city. The RSF and the Sudanese army are fighting for power over Sudan from 2023. According to the World Health Organization, more than 40,000 people were killed and 12 million people were displaced in this war.
