SIR in 12 States: After Bihar, now the Special Intensive Review (SIR) process has started in other 9 states and three union territories of the country. From today i.e. Tuesday, the SIR process has started in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Andaman Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Puducherry and Goa and will end after the release of the final voter list on 7 February 2026. 51 crore voters will be reviewed in these states.
What did the Election Commission say?
Assembly elections are to be held in these states next year in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and West Bengal. Elections are also to be held in Assam in 2026, but the voter list amendment will be announced separately as the process of citizenship verification is going on in the state under the supervision of the Supreme Court. Additionally, a separate provision of the Citizenship Act applies in Assam. Announcing the second phase of SIR on October 27, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said, “Under the Citizenship Act, there are separate provisions for citizenship in Assam. The process of citizenship verification is almost being completed under the supervision of the Supreme Court. The June 24 SIR order was for the entire country. Under the circumstances, it is not applicable to Assam.”

The SIR process will start from November 4 and continue till December 4. The Election Commission will release the draft voter list on 9 December and the final voter list will be published on 7 February.

Door-to-door review work – From November 4, 2025 to December 4, 2025.
Publication of draft voter list – December 9, 2025.
Period for claims and objections – December 9, 2025 to January 8, 2026.
Notice, hearing and verification of documents: December 9, 2025 to January 31, 2026.
Publication of final voter list – February 7, 2026
