Babri Masjid controversy: A new twist has come in the Nehru-Babri Masjid dispute. While presenting the diary of Maniben Patel, Congress said that there is no mention of Babri Masjid anywhere in this diary. On this Rajnath said that he does not know Gujarati. It is known that recently Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had said that Nehru wanted to build Babri Masjid with public money. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Thursday handed over a copy of the Gujarati diary of Vallabhbhai Patel’s daughter Maniben Patel to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. Jairam Ramesh told Rajnath that there is no mention in the diary that Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to build Babri Masjid with public money. Rajnath came face to face with Jairam as soon as he got down from the car outside the Makar Gate of Parliament.
Congress handed over Maniben’s diary to Rajnath
Ramesh told Rajnath that he had specially brought Maniben Patel’s Gujarati diary for him, to which the BJP leader replied that we have it in English. Handing over the papers containing the original Gujarati diary and its Hindi translation published in the book, Ramesh asked Singh to read it. On this Rajnath Singh replied that he does not know Gujarati. The Congress leader said that there is no mention in the diary of Singh’s claim that Nehru wanted to build Babri Masjid with public money. Last week, Congress had shared some diary entries of Vallabhbhai Patel’s daughter from a book to counter Singh’s claim that Nehru wanted to build Babri Masjid with public money. Jairam had demanded an apology from the Defense Minister for spreading lies.
Defense Minister’s claims are lies and fabrications
Ramesh had claimed that the Defense Minister was spreading lies to improve his relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On pages 212-213 of the book ‘Samparit Pachayo Sardarno’ written by CA RS Patel ‘Aaresh’, which was published by the Sardar Patel Vallabhbhai Patel Memorial Society in 2025, Ramesh said while sharing screenshots of the relevant pages of the book on X. Congress leader Ramesh had said that there is a huge difference between what is written in the original diary and what Rajnath Singh and his fellow analysts are propagating. Congress had earlier termed Rajnath’s claim that Nehru wanted to build Babri Masjid with public money as a lie and a fabricated story. It was said that the Defense Minister should not follow the path of Prime Minister Modi.
BJP claims- Nehru had raised the issue of Babri Masjid
Last Tuesday, while addressing a meeting in Sadhli village of Vadodara district of Gujarat, Defense Minister Singh had said that Nehru wanted to build Babri Masjid with public money, but Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel did not allow his plan to succeed. The BJP cited a book by Vallabhbhai Patel’s daughter to buttress Singh’s claims. BJP Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said that the source of Rajnath Singh’s statement is ‘Inside Story of Sardar Patel, Diary of Maniben Patel’. Trivedi had claimed that on page 24 of the book it is written that Nehru had also raised the issue of Babri Masjid, but Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel did not allow his plan to succeed. Patel made it clear that the government cannot spend any money on the construction of the mosque.
