At that time people believed that the distance between the living and the dead worlds reduces and on this night the souls of dead people come to earth and trouble people. To scare and mislead the spirits, people make themselves like ghosts. People try to scare away ghosts by lighting fires. However, now most people celebrate it just for fun.

Let us tell you, in the eighth century, Pope Gregory started celebrating November 1 as ‘All Saints Day’. Christian saints are remembered on this day. Earlier the evening of 31st October came to be called All Hallows’ Eve. With time its name changed to be called Halloween. Earlier it was celebrated only in western countries, but now it is celebrated in many places in India.

On this festival, people wear different types of scary clothes and do makeup like ghosts. There is a competition among people to become the scariest ghost. On this day, children also go to people’s homes disguised as ghosts and witches and ask them ‘Trick-or-Treat’ questions, after which people give them toffees and chocolates to escape from them. Many people organize games and have parties on this day.
What is the connection with pumpkin?
This day also has a connection with pumpkin. Pumpkins are also made scary on Halloween. An orange pumpkin is hollowed out and eyes, nose and mouth are made in it. After this, a candle is lit in the pumpkin and it is hung on a tree or outside the house. It is believed that this prevents spirits from entering the house.
