SP demands removal of officer appointed on the basis of caste and religion

Uttar Pradesh SIR: In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer, SP State President Shyam Lal Pal made serious allegations of bias in the appointments made before starting the operation of SIR in the state.

Uttar Pradesh SIR: After Bihar, in the second phase, the Election Commission is going to conduct Special Intensive Review (SIR) in 12 states and Union Territories from November 4. Meanwhile, now the opposition has started targeting the Election Commission and the Chief Minister of Kerala said that this is a process that destroys democracy. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party (SP) on Tuesday raised questions on SIR. The party said it demanded the removal of booth-level officers, additional district magistrates (elections) and electoral registration officers, allegedly appointed on caste and religious grounds, before conducting a special intensive vetting.

Officers of all religions and castes should be appointed

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer, Samajwadi Party State President Shyam Lal Pal made serious allegations of bias in the appointments made before starting the operation of SIR in 403 assembly constituencies of the state. The state president said that the ruling BJP government is trying to influence this process by appointing officers with its ideological mindset. The party also said that 1,62,486 polling stations across the state will work to cover about 15.44 crore voters during the SIR process. Samajwadi Party also urged the Election Commission to appoint officials of all castes and religions in a fair and transparent manner.

Commission reminded of previous incident

In its memorandum, the party mentioned the 2024 assembly by-elections in Sisamau constituency of Kanpur Nagar and Katehari constituency of Ambedkar Nagar. Where Samajwadi Party alleged that booth level officials were changed on the basis of caste and religion. Apart from this, his complaints dated 23 August and 23 September 2024 were ignored and no action was taken in this matter. He claimed that similar irregularities took place in the appointment of polling and counting personnel during the 2024 by-elections, but the Election Commission remained a silent spectator.
