SIR in West Bengal: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has threatened that if the name of even one eligible voter is removed from the list in Bengal, the NDA government will fall. Mamata Banerjee said on Tuesday that if the name of even one eligible voter is left out of the list, then the fall of the BJP-led NDA government at the Center is certain. She accused the saffron party and the Election Commission of using SIR as a political weapon to intimidate voters ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Leading a massive anti-SIR rally in Kolkata, Banerjee accused the Election Commission (EC) of selectively conducting the revision drive in opposition-ruled states and sparing BJP-ruled states. The TMC chief alleged that the Election Commission is conducting SIR in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, but not in BJP-ruled Assam. Assembly elections are to be held in these four states next year.
SIR politically motivated
He demanded that the Election Commission should also answer why there is no SIR in BJP-ruled Assam, Tripura and other north-eastern states. He called it clear discrimination aimed at helping the ruling party at the Centre. He said the last SIR in West Bengal in 2002 took at least two years to complete. He wondered why the Election Commission is in a hurry to complete it in just one month this time. Banerjee termed the current process as hasty and politically motivated. Banerjee announced amid thunderous applause from her supporters that if even a single eligible voter is removed from the voter list, we will ensure the fall of this BJP government. Challenging BJP’s repeated claims of illegal voters in West Bengal, Banerjee asked how many Rohingyas or Bangladeshis were found in Bihar after SIR?
BJP accused of defaming Bengalis
He stressed that merely speaking Bengali does not make one a Bangladeshi. He accused the saffron party of spreading fake news and communal propaganda to defame Bengalis. Targeting the saffron party, the TMC supremo said that BJP wants to win not on the basis of votes but on the basis of notes. If this voter list is fake, then how did BJP win the last elections on the basis of this list? Banerjee alleged that SIR means invisible rigging and the BJP is using it to create fear among voters. He asked whether we will have to prove our citizenship before the BJP after being born and brought up on this earth? The crowd strongly supported him on this. Mamata Banerjee, who was present with her nephew and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee during the protest march, said that if necessary, TMC will take this fight to Delhi.
