Bilaspur Train Accident: A passenger train and a goods train collided near Bilaspur railway station in Chhattisgarh. 11 people died and 20 others were injured in the accident.

Bilaspur Train Accident: The death toll in the collision between a passenger train and a goods train near Bilaspur railway station in Chhattisgarh has increased to 11. Officials said the incident occurred around 4 pm on Tuesday when the MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) passenger train was going from Gevra (in neighboring Korba district) to Bilaspur. A statement issued by the railways said, “11 people died and 20 others were injured in the accident.”
Treatment continues for the injured
The railway administration immediately started relief and rescue operations. The injured are being given proper treatment in nearby hospitals. Railway officials said that the collision was so severe that a coach of the passenger train fell on top of a coach of the goods train. The injured passengers have been admitted to Apollo Hospital and Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) in Bilaspur.
Goods train collided with passenger train
A senior railway official said, “After crossing the red signal, the passenger train hit the goods train from behind at a speed of 60 to 70 km per hour.” “It is now a matter of investigation as to why the loco pilot broke the red signal and did not apply the emergency brake on time even though the goods train was visible,” the officer said. Loco pilot Vidya Sagar of the passenger train also died in this accident and assistant loco pilot Rashmi Raj was seriously injured. The official said that the passenger train collided with the brake van with such force that it was badly damaged.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai expressed grief over the accident and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50 thousand each to the injured.

In an official statement from the Railways, it has been said that a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each has been announced to the families of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh each to the seriously injured, while an assistance amount of Rs 1 lakh will be given to the minor injured. A detailed investigation of the incident will be conducted at the level of Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to ascertain the cause and suggest necessary corrective measures.
