Security has been tightened in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka on Thursday in view of the Dhaka bandh called by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s now-dissolved Awami League. A member of the special court’s prosecution team said the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT-BD) will set a date for delivering its verdict on the charges against Sheikh Hasina and her top aides.

Army and border guards deployed in Bangladesh

Authorities have deployed the Army, paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police forces equipped with anti-riot equipment to beef up security in and around the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT-BD) complex, while thousands of people remained indoors due to tight security amid Awami League protests. The streets of Dhaka looked empty on Thursday. However, many private institutions, including universities, moved online due to fear of inciting violence. An office-going employee said that there is no sense of fear among us. However, a private passenger bus driver said the number of passengers was less than other days, but the city roads looked almost as busy as usual. Unidentified people reportedly set fire to five buses in the capital, suburban Munshiganj, central Tangail and Hasina’s hometown in south-western Gopalganj, but no casualties were reported.

International Criminal Tribunal will decide the date of verdict

The International Criminal Tribunal (ICT-BD) is due to announce the date of its verdict in a crime against humanity case against Hasina, her then interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kanal and former police chief Abdullah Al Manun. Sheikh Hasina was accused of suppressing the student-led movement in July last year. The movement overthrew the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024. Chief prosecutor Tajul Islam and his colleagues have sought death penalty for Hasina after filing a complaint in five cases at the tribunal on June 1. In the first case, the defendants were accused of murder, attempt to murder, torture and other inhumane acts, while in the second case, Hasina was accused of ordering the destruction of the protesters. In the third case, he was accused of making inflammatory remarks and ordering the use of lethal weapons against protesting students. In the remaining cases, the defendants were accused of shooting dead six unarmed protesters, including students, in Dhaka and its suburbs.
