Srinagar Blast: After Delhi, there was a big explosion in Srinagar also. Nine people have died and 32 have been injured in the explosion at Naugam police station in Srinagar. Senior officials said on Saturday that this was not a terrorist attack. The blast occurred around 11:20 pm on Friday night, when a special team was taking out samples from a large cache of explosives seized in connection with the investigation of the Faridabad terror module. Due to negligence the explosive exploded.

The explosion was unfortunate – police

Jammu and Kashmir Police Director General Nalin Prabhat said that in this “unfortunate” blast, three personnel of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, two crime photographers, two revenue officers (part of the magistrate’s team), an officer of the state Jamach agency and a tailor attached to the team were killed. He said that 27 policemen, two revenue officers and three civilians from nearby areas were injured in the incident and they were immediately taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Explosion occurred while taking sample of explosives

Both Prabhat and Lokhande clarified that the blast occurred when FSL teams were carrying out the routine process of collecting samples for forensic and chemical testing from a large cache of seized explosives. “Due to the volatile and sensitive nature of the seizure, the process and conduct of the sample collection was being done with utmost caution by the FSL team,” Prabhat said. “However, unfortunately, during this process, at around 11.20 pm last night, an accidental explosion occurred,” he said. He said the sample collection process was going on for two days due to the “large volume” of seizures. The massive explosion badly damaged the police station building and also affected nearby buildings. Initially, frequent small explosions hampered rescue operations.

Explosives were seized from Faridabad

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has ordered an investigation into the explosion at the police station. In his post on X, he said, “I have ordered an investigation to find out the cause of the accidental explosion.” The materials being sampled included approximately 360 kilograms of explosive substances, chemicals and reagents, including ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate and sulphur. A top official said that this huge cache of explosives was brought from Faridabad in Haryana packed in small bags in a Tata 407 pickup truck.

The case was registered in Naugam police station itself.

Regarding the reason behind taking the explosives to Kashmir, the officer said that the original FI was lodged at Naugam police station and the explosives were the property of the same police station. Therefore, it was necessary to carry the explosives this far. Asked about the possible locations of the ‘white-collar’ terror module collecting explosives, the officer said investigators were still searching for clues.
