Election Commission: Congress on Sunday lashed out at BJP over the death of some Booth Level Officers (BLOs) engaged in Special Intensive Revision (SIR) work of voter lists in various states. Said that BLO is being harassed through SIR. People are getting upset in this process. Opposition parties alleged that the deaths of booth level officers (BLOs) were being ignored due to unnecessary pressure. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that in the name of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter list, anarchy has been created in the entire country. Result? 16 BLOs lost their lives in three weeks. Heart attack, stress, suicide – SIR is not an improvement, it is an imposed oppression. The leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha further said that the Election Commission of India has created a system where citizens have to sift through thousands of scanned pages of the 22-year-old voter list to find their names.
Sacrificing democracy for power
He alleged that the objective was clear: to exhaust genuine voters and allow voter fraud to continue unabated. Rahul Gandhi said that India develops cutting-edge software for the world, but the Election Commission of India is still adamant on creating a jungle of paperwork. The former Congress chief claimed that if the intentions were pure, the list would have been digital, searchable and machine-readable and the Election Commission would have taken its time to focus on transparency and accountability instead of working in a hurry in the 30 days. Gandhi said the SIR is a deliberate ploy whereby civilians are being harassed and the death of the BLO is being ignored due to unnecessary pressure. He said this is not a failure, it is a conspiracy. Democracy is being sacrificed to protect power.
Comparison of SIR with demonetization and lockdown
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also criticized the BJP on the issue and claimed that the SIR was reminiscent of demonetization and the Covid-19 lockdown. He said that vote theft by BJP has now taken a fatal turn. The Congress President claimed that the workload is forcing BLOs and polling officers to commit suicide. Kharge said that I have deep condolences to every family who has lost their loved one. He alleged that the BJP is busy enjoying the stolen power, while the Election Commission is watching as a mute spectator. The hasty, unplanned and forced implementation of SIR is reminiscent of demonetization and the Covid-19 lockdown. He alleged that BJP’s hunger for power is forcing institutions to commit suicide, flouting the Constitution and weakening democracy through abuse of power. Just Enough! If we do not wake up even now, no one can save the last pillars of democracy from collapse.
Raise your voice, save democracy!
Said that the people who remain silent on SIR and vote theft are responsible for the death of these innocent BLOs. Raise your voice, save democracy! On the other hand, police said that a woman working as a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in Nadia district of West Bengal was found hanging at her house on Saturday. Her family members claim that she was stressed by SIR work and committed suicide. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief over the death of the BLO and said that it has now become really worrying. Apart from this, two teachers working as BLOs for the SIR exercise died of the disease in Raisen and Damoh districts of Madhya Pradesh on Friday.
