Russia-Ukraine war: Efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war are finally making some progress. However, it is not yet clear how many steps have actually been taken on the path to peace. Both America and Ukraine claimed on Sunday that progress was being made in the talks, but they avoided giving any concrete steps or clear information about the agreement. At the same time, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the high-stakes meeting held in Geneva as useful. He said that this was the most productive conversation after a long time. According to him, this is a ray of hope that something big can happen soon. However, he declined to talk about the specifics of the talks.

Europe’s restlessness

Rubio made it clear that Europe’s responsibilities may be different in America’s peace plan. At the same time, issues related to Russia and Ukraine will be dealt with differently. He also reminded that Russia will also have to accept the final decision. President Trump has already taken a dig at US aid to Ukraine, but has refrained from directly criticizing Russia. He has given Ukraine a deadline to respond to the American proposal by Thursday. However, Rubio signaled that if progress is seen, this timeline may extend further. At the same time, European countries and many American leaders have said this plan is in favor of Russia. According to some US senators, Rubio himself has said that this plan looks like a wish list of Russia. However, he later called it a misunderstanding.

Want peace, but will not give land

Chief of Ukrainian Delegation Andriy Yermak said that the first meeting was very good and the second meeting will start soon. He also said that the final decision will be taken jointly by the Presidents of Ukraine and America. However, the biggest issue is America’s 28 point plan, which reportedly accepts many of Russia’s demands. This also includes the demand to leave large areas of land from Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky has already made it clear that no regional agreement will be accepted. He says that Ukraine will always defend its land. France has also objected to this plan, especially on those points which limit the capability and sovereignty of Ukraine’s military.

Russia and Türkiye’s bet

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will talk to Russian President Putin on Monday and try to revive the 2022 wheat export agreement. His move can add a new link to peace talks. It can be said that, there is talk of peace, but peace is still far away.
