Bangladesh Tribunal: After Sheikh Hasina, her son’s troubles have also increased in Bangladesh. A special tribunal in Bangladesh on Thursday issued an arrest warrant against Sajib Wajed Joy, the expatriate son of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. It is known that a month ago his mother Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death for committing crimes against humanity. A prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for Bangladesh (ICT-BD) told reporters that the tribunal has issued an arrest warrant in a case registered against him for crimes against humanity during the July insurgency in the country. The ICT-BD prosecutor said a similar warrant was issued against Junaid Ahmed Palak, the then junior minister for ICT affairs. Although he is already in jail.
Sheikh Hasina has also received death sentence
The International Criminal Tribunal for Bangladesh (ICT-BD) sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her then Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for suppressing violent student-led protests through inhumane means. The student-led violent street movement in July ousted the Awami League government of former Prime Minister Hasina on August 5, 2025. Whereas in January, the interim government led by Professor Muhammad released a list of 834 deaths of “July warriors”. The Office of the UN Human Rights Commission (OHCHR) reported 1,400 deaths between 15 July and 15 August, saying the figure also included the results of retaliatory violence against police and Awami League activists following the fall of the previous government.
Stir in Bangladesh due to issue of warrant
In a separate case filed on Thursday over mass killings following imposition of curfew during the protests, the ICT-BD accepted formal charges against former law minister Anisul Haq and former prime minister’s investment adviser Salman F Rehman. On the other hand, there has been an increase in unrest in Bangladesh due to the arrest warrant being issued against the son of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. It is known that after being ousted from the post of Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina has taken refuge in India. After the sentence was pronounced against her, Hasina had said that action has been taken against her due to political malice. She will continue her fight against the punishment.
