After the attack, an air strike warning was issued throughout Ukraine. Russia launched a major missile and drone barrage on Ukraine on Saturday night. Earlier, US and Ukrainian officials had said they would meet on Saturday for the third day of talks aimed at ending the nearly four-year-old war. Russia used 653 drones and 51 missiles in the horrific attack, due to which an airstrike warning was issued across the country. This attack took place on Armed Forces Day in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces shot down and neutralized 585 drones and 30 missiles, the country’s air force said Saturday. Ukrainian Internal Affairs Minister Ihor Klimenko said that 29 locations were attacked. At least eight people were injured in the attacks.
Fastiv city railway station destroyed in attack
Ukraine’s national energy operator Ukrainergo wrote on Telegram that Russia launched a massive missile drone attack on power plants and other energy plants in several Ukrainian regions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that energy plants were the main targets of the attacks. He also said that a drone strike destroyed the railway station in the city of Fastiv in the Kiev region. Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defense systems shot down 116 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory by Saturday night. Russian Telegram news channel Astra said Ukraine attacked Russia’s Ryazan oil refinery and shared footage showing a fire and smoke billowing over the refinery. The Associated Press could not independently verify the video. Ukraine did not immediately comment on the attack. Ryazan regional governor Pavel Malkov said the drone strike damaged a residential building and that drone debris fell in a field.
Russia is targeting the power grid
Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries are aimed at depriving Moscow of oil export revenues it needs to fuel the war. Meanwhile Kiev and its Western allies say Russia is trying to paralyze the Ukrainian power grid and deprive citizens of access to cold, heat, light and drinking water. This latest attack comes at a time when US President Donald Trump’s advisers and Ukrainian officials have said they will meet for the third day of talks on Saturday. After Friday’s talks, both sides also made a serious assessment that long-term peace will depend on Russia’s seriousness. Advisers briefed only on progress as Trump presses Kiev and Moscow to agree to a US-brokered resolution to end the nearly four-year war.
