The attacker was a member of the Syrian security forces
The shooting took place near historic Palmyra, according to state news agency SANA, which earlier said two members of Syrian security forces and several US soldiers were wounded. The injured were taken by helicopter to Al-Tanf Garrison near the border between Iraq and Jordan. SANA said the attacker was killed, but did not provide further details. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attacker was a member of Syrian security forces.
US President Donald Trump wrote in a social media post, “We mourn the loss of three great American patriots, two soldiers and one civilian, in Syria. We also pray for the three wounded soldiers, whose condition is now reported to be stable. This was an attack by ISIS on America and Syria in a very dangerous part of Syria, which is not completely under their control. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is very angry and disturbed by this attack. It will be given a strong response.”

America is fighting together with the Syrian coalition
The US military has deployed hundreds of troops to eastern Syria as part of the coalition fighting the Islamic State group. ISI was defeated on the battlefield in Syria in 2019, but the group’s sleeper cells still carry out deadly attacks in the country. The United Nations says the group still has 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
