UP News: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced ‘Gomti Revival Mission’ on Sunday. Under the mission, 95 percent of urban sewage falling into the river will be stopped. An official statement said the action plan will cover the entire river basin from Pilibhit to Ghazipur, with the aim of cleaning the water. The Chief Minister made this announcement in a meeting organized with the help of Territorial Army. During the meeting, officials said that out of 39 major drains falling into Gomti, 13 are unusable. The statement said that currently six sewage treatment plants (STPs) with a combined capacity of 605 MLD are operational along the river banks in the state. Officials said that under the mission, excess drains will be diverted into STPs. He said that campaigns will also be run to remove encroachment, beautification of river ghats and increase green area on the banks.

Ban on plastic should be strictly enforced

The Chief Minister directed for strict implementation of the ban on single-use plastic, calling it a major cause of sewer jams and water pollution. After reviewing the action plan and issuing key directions, Adityanath said the mission is not limited to water purification alone, but represents a broader effort to revive environmental and cultural values. Describing the river as a symbol of the cultural consciousness and spiritual heritage of the state, the Chief Minister said that this mission should be more than just an administrative exercise and should develop into a mass movement involving every section of the society, according to the statement. He said that this initiative will become a symbol of environmental responsibility and inter-generational commitment. He said that its objective is biological, cultural and aesthetic revival of the river.

Formation of Gomti Task Force

Officials said that the Gomti Task Force, formed in January this year under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), includes the project director of the State Clean Ganga Mission and representatives of the Irrigation Department, Pollution Control Board, Jal Nigam, Lucknow Municipal Corporation and Lucknow Development Authority as well as subject experts. According to the statement, the task force has mobilized more than 70,000 citizens through foot and boat patrols. More than 1,000 tonnes of water hyacinth has been removed. Drains have been surveyed to identify pollution sources and more than 100 awareness campaigns have been conducted. The statement said that under the ‘River Yoga Campaign’ organized between April 21 and June 21 this year, several activities and cleanliness drives were also organized at five major ghats of the river. Going forward, officials have been asked to hold monthly review meetings of the task force and submit quarterly progress reports to the Chief Minister’s Office, the statement said. Officials said Adityanath has also assured that adequate resources will be made available for the mission to prevent any shortage of essential equipment, including track boats, floating barriers and excavators.
