Who will take charge in place of Gill?
Hours after being retired hurt in India’s first innings, Gill was stretchered off to hospital on Saturday evening with a neck injury. The Indian captain felt neck pain soon after attempting a sweep shot off South African spinner Simon Harmer and left the field after receiving initial treatment from the team’s medical staff. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who captained India in Gill’s absence on Saturday, will lead the team in the remaining matches as well.
coach’s statement
India’s assistant coach Morne Morkel blamed this on “not the workload, but not a good night’s sleep”. Morkel told the media after the second day, “Yes, I think we first have to find out how he got the stiff neck, maybe because of not sleeping well at night. I don’t think that’s the case, or we can consider it because of the workload.”
