Justice Surya Kant appointed 53rd CJI: President Draupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Surya Kant as the new Chief Justice of India. He will take oath as the new Chief Justice of India on November 24. Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has given information regarding this. The tenure of the current Chief Justice of the country BR Gavai will end on November 23, after which he will take charge.

The Union Minister of State for Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India has shared the information by posting on social media X. He wrote that in exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, Mr. President has appointed Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from November 24, 2025. I extend my hearty congratulations and best wishes to him.
Justice Surya Kant’s tenure will be 15 months
Let us tell you here that Justice Gavai, who took oath as the Chief Justice on May 14 this year, had recommended the name of Justice Surya Kant as the next Chief Justice. On this basis, the government recommended the name of Justice Surya Kant and the President appointed him. At the same time, the tenure of Justice Surya Kant, who was promoted as Supreme Court judge on May 24, 2019, as Chief Justice will be about 15 months. He will retire on February 9, 2027.
Who is Justice Surya Kant
Justice Surya Kant, resident of Haryana, was born on February 10, 1962 in Hisar. He is currently the senior most judge after CJI Gavai and his name has also been recommended. Justice Surya Kant completed his graduation from Government Post Graduate College in the year 1981. After this, he completed his law studies from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak in 1984. In the same year, he started his practice from a district court in Hisar. After about a year, he reached Punjab and High Court to practice.
After practicing for about 21 years, Justice Surya Kant was appointed as a permanent judge in the Punjab and High Court in 2004. At the same time, on October 5, 2018, he was appointed the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court. After serving here for about a year, he was appointed as Justice in the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019. Now, five years later, CJI Gavai has sent a recommendation to the Law Ministry for the appointment of him as the next Chief Justice.
Justice Surya Kant has taken big decisions
Justice Surya Kant has taken many big decisions during his tenure. In an order to promote transparency in the election process, he asked the Election Commission to provide details of 65 lakh names removed from the draft voter list after SIR in Bihar. Justice Surya Kant is also credited with ensuring that one-third of the seats in bar associations, including the Supreme Court Bar Association, are reserved for women. He upheld the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme for the defense forces as constitutionally valid and continued hearing petitions by women officers of the armed forces demanding equality in permanent commission in the army.
Was also involved in decisions related to Aligarh Muslim University
It is noteworthy that Justice Surya Kant was also included in the 7-judge bench which had rejected the 1967 Aligarh Muslim University decision. This opened the way for reconsideration of the minority status of the institute. He was also part of the bench hearing the Pegasus spyware case, which appointed a panel of cyber experts to investigate allegations of illegal surveillance. Along with this, he was also a part of the bench which had appointed a 5-member committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Indu Malhotra to investigate the security violations during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab in 2022.
