Increased stir in Pakistan: Son demands proof of father Imran being alive, protest outside jail

Imran Khan: The son of jailed former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has put the government in the dock by demanding proof of his father being alive. He has demanded that he present proof that the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is alive. Khan’s son Qasim Khan said in a social media post on Friday evening that we demand proof of Imran Khan being alive. There is speculation that 73-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician Khan has been murdered in jail as neither his family members nor his lawyers and party people have been allowed to meet him for over a month. Imran Khan has been lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail for more than two years on various charges. Khan’s three sisters, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi have been camping outside Adiala jail for the past few days and are pressurizing the Shehbaz Sharif government to allow their family members to meet them.

No permission to meet despite court orders

Qasim said that my father has been arrested for 845 days. For the last six weeks he has been kept in a death cell in solitary confinement in the dark. His sisters have been deprived of every meeting. Even despite clear court orders, they are not being allowed to meet. There have been no phone calls, no meetings and no evidence of life. My brother and I have no contact with our father. Criticizing the government, Qasim further said that this complete blackout is not a security protocol. He said that due to this inhumane separation, he has called for the immediate intervention of the international community, global human rights organizations and every democratic voice. Khan’s son said that we demand proof of his life. Demand to implement the court order. We demand the release of Pakistan’s most popular political leader, who has been detained solely for political reasons.

Warning of nationwide protests

Qasim re-posted a post which claimed that Khan had lost a lot of weight. He has vision problems and fear is increasing among people regarding slow poisoning. Khan’s party has warned authorities of nationwide protests if the government does not allow his sisters to meet him. His sisters have also warned that if anything happens to Khan, those involved and their families will not be spared by Pakistanis here and abroad. Khan’s sister on Friday filed a contempt petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the Adiala Jail Superintendent and others for not allowing her to meet the jailed former Prime Minister of Pakistan. Alima Khan filed the petition in the presence of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and other PTI leaders. An appeal was filed against the IHC’s March 24 order, in which the court had reinstated twice-weekly meeting schedules for Khan.
