Karnataka Assembly: Social boycotters are no longer in trouble in Karnataka. Those boycotting can face jail up to 3 years and a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh. The government has introduced a bill to ban social boycott. The Karnataka government has introduced the ‘Karnataka Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Bill, 2025’ in the Assembly. A provision has been made in the bill that if any person or group, especially Panchayats, socially boycott anyone, it will be considered a crime. Violation is punishable with jail up to three years and a fine up to Rs 1 lakh. The government says that people have to face serious harassment due to the unconstitutional practices of Panchayats. It has an adverse effect on social life and gives rise to ill will and disharmony in the society. Therefore, it is necessary to root out these evils and unconstitutional practices from the society.
Social Boycott Prohibition Officer also appointed
The bill states that existing laws are inadequate to deal with such practices. Therefore the government thought it appropriate to make a new law. Social Boycott Prohibition Officer will also be appointed for monitoring. With the passing of the bill, bad practices like social boycott and social discrimination will be stopped. It has been made clear in the bill that social boycott will be a crime. The bill states that any assembly or conference of persons to discuss imposing social boycott will be illegal and can be punished with a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh. Any offense punishable under this proposed law will be cognizable and bailable. There is a provision in this bill for the government to appoint a social boycott prohibition officer. The government also introduced the “Governance of Greater Bengaluru (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025” in the Assembly on Thursday.
MP will also be a member of Greater Bengaluru Authority
The bill, introduced by Minister Mahadevappa on behalf of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, amends the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, under which members of the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Assembly and State Legislative Council have been included as members of the Greater Bengaluru Authority. There is also a provision to include the Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary of the Urban Development Department and Additional Chief Secretary or Principal Secretary of the Finance Department as ex-officio members of the Authority.
