President Draupadi Murmu: President Draupadi Murmu on Monday said technology has brought sweeping changes in the field of policing and ‘digital arrest’ has become one of the most dangerous threats to citizens. Addressing a group of Indian Police Service (IPS) probationary officers at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Murmu said that people, especially the marginalized, should see the police not as a fearsome entity but as a support. The President said that India is the fastest growing major economy in the world and we need large-scale public and private investment to sustain our economic growth. He said that law and order is a necessary condition to attract investment in any state or region. Effective policing is as important as economic incentives in promoting investment and growth.
Technology has brought changes in the field of policing.
Murmu said that technology has brought a lot of changes in the field of policing. About 10 years ago, the term ‘digital arrest’ would have been impossible to understand. Today it is one of the most frightening threats to civilians. Digital arrest is a scam that aims to extort money from victims by using fear, deceit and intimidation. Fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials and use threats such as arrest and confiscation of bank accounts to force victims to deposit money as fine or security deposit to avoid legal action. These fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officers and use video calls to target victims. Murmu also said that India has the largest and fastest growing user of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Police should work for weaker sections
He said that this will also affect the police system. In adopting new technologies including AI, you have to be several steps ahead of those who use these technologies with wrong intentions. Murmu said that the culture of Indian policing would mean maintaining the spirit of service, sensitivity and empathy, especially for the weaker sections of the society. The President said that a police officer deals with crime and criminals almost all the time. Murmu said that in order to become an effective officer, you should make special efforts to maintain the feeling of compassion within yourself. This sensitivity should extend to the people you will serve, and also to your team members. Murmu said that I have full confidence that the representation of women IPS officers will further increase.
