Gold Smuggling: With the recent rise in gold prices, gold smuggling has once again intensified at the airports of Kerala. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Customs Department on Sunday seized a huge consignment of smuggled gold at Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi airports. The Customs Department says that smuggling cases have increased in the last few weeks. Officials believe that the main reason for this is the continuous increase in the prices of gold, due to which illegal smuggling has again become a business for some people.
Increased hustle and bustle at airports
On Sunday, the customs team recovered 360 grams of gold from a passenger at Thiruvananthapuram airport. After investigation it was revealed that the gold was very cleverly hidden in the body and clothes. Custom (Preventive) Commissionerate, Kochi said that there has been a clear increase in smuggling cases recently. Apart from this, gold worth Rs 1.6 crore was seized in two separate cases last week. According to officials, smugglers are now trying new methods. Some are hiding the gold in the form of pearl necklaces, while others are carrying it stitched in the folds of clothes.
